How to Choose Floor Music for Your Gymnast
Choosing floor music is one of the most exciting parts of competition season โ but it can also feel overwhelming. With over 70,000 songs to pick from on FloorMusic.com alone, how do you find the one that fits your gymnast's routine, personality, and level?
Whether you're a parent shopping for the first time or a coach looking for fresh options, this guide covers everything you need to know.
๐ตStart With Your Gymnast's Style
The best floor music reflects who your gymnast is on the floor. Watch them in practice and think about what kind of energy they bring:
- Powerful and dramatic? Look for orchestral pieces, movie soundtracks, or bold rock instrumentals.
- Fun and energetic? Upbeat pop, Latin, or electronic tracks work well.
- Graceful and lyrical? Piano-driven melodies, jazz, or softer pop instrumentals are a great match.
- Sassy and confident? Hip-hop beats, funk, or pop anthems bring that personality out.
There's no wrong answer here. The goal is a song that your gymnast feels excited to perform to โ that energy shows in their routine.
โฑKnow Your Time Limit
Every USAG level has a maximum floor music length. Buying music at the wrong length means you'll need to re-purchase or re-cut it.
Before you shop, confirm your gymnast's level and the corresponding time limit. We have a complete breakdown in our USAG Floor Music Time Limits by Level guide.
โชListen for Structure, Not Just a Good Song
A song you love on the radio might not work as floor music. Here's what to listen for:
- Clear tempo changes: Floor routines need moments of high energy and moments of control. Music that shifts between fast and slow sections gives the gymnast natural cues for tumbling passes, dance sequences, and poses.
- A strong opening: The first few seconds set the tone. A punchy or dramatic intro grabs the judges' attention immediately.
- A definitive ending: Ideally, the music has a clear final note or hit that the gymnast can land their final pose on. Fade-outs can work too, but a strong ending makes a bigger impression.
- Dynamic range: Monotone tracks (same energy the whole way through) make it hard to choreograph an interesting routine.
โ Understand the Rules About Vocals
This is one of the most common sources of confusion. Here's the current rule for the 2026-2027 season:
- Human voice is allowed. Vocalizations, humming, chanting, and other non-word sounds are perfectly fine with no deduction.
- Music with recognizable words may receive a 0.50 Chief Judge deduction.
Most gymnasts use instrumental versions or tracks where vocals are present but don't contain clear words. If you want the full breakdown, read our 2026-2027 Rule Changes article.
โPre-Cut vs. Custom Cut
When buying floor music, you'll typically choose between two options:
- Pre-cut: The song has already been professionally edited to a specific length (e.g., 0:45, 1:00, 1:15, 1:30). You get it instantly after purchase โ ready to use.
- Custom cut: You choose a full-length song and we cut a single section of it to your desired length. You can pick which part of the song to use, but it has to be one continuous section โ not a mashup or splice of multiple parts. Takes a few days to complete.
Our recommendation: If you find a pre-cut version you love, go with it โ it's faster and often less expensive. If you have a specific section of a song in mind, a custom cut is worth the wait.
โStand Out (Without Going Overboard)
Judges see dozens of routines at every meet. Music that stands out โ in a good way โ helps your gymnast make an impression. A few tips:
- Avoid the most overused songs. If three gymnasts at the same meet all use the same track, none of them stand out. Browse beyond the top picks.
- Consider movie and TV soundtracks. Film scores are designed to be dramatic and emotional โ exactly what floor routines need โ and they're less commonly used than pop hits.
- Think about genre variety. Latin, jazz, and K-Pop tracks are underused in gymnastics and can be really memorable on the floor.
- Let your gymnast pick. They're the one performing. If they feel connected to the music, it shows.
