USAG 2026-2027 Floor Music Rule Changes: New Time Limits, Vocal Ban Removed, and More

April 2, 2026 · FloorMusic.com Staff · 5 min read

There has been a lot of confusion and misinformation circulating about USAG floor music rules for the upcoming season. We went directly to the official committee meeting minutes to set the record straight.

USA Gymnastics held its annual committee meetings in May 2025, and several important rule changes were approved that will affect floor music for the 2026-2027 competitive season. Here is a complete breakdown of what actually changed, what it means for gymnasts and coaches, and links to the official meeting minutes so you can verify everything yourself.

Xcel Time Limit Changes — Silver and Platinum

Effective August 1, 2026, the floor routine time limits will change for two Xcel divisions:

DivisionCurrent LimitNew Limit (Aug 2026)
Silver1:000:45
Platinum1:301:15

All other Xcel divisions (Bronze, Gold, Diamond) retain their current time limits. If you are purchasing floor music for the 2026-2027 season, make sure you select the correct length for your gymnast's division.

Vocal Ban Removed — Human Voice Still Allowed

In May 2024, the Technical Committee had passed a motion that would have banned all human and synthesized voice from floor music beginning August 1, 2026. This caused significant concern across the gymnastics community.

Good news: At the May 2025 meeting, the Technical Committee voted to rescind that motion entirely. The proposed voice ban has been removed, and human voice in floor music will continue to be allowed.

Music With Words: Deduction Reduced to 0.50

While human voice is still allowed, music that contains words or speech may incur a Chief Judge deduction. The committees voted to reduce this deduction from 1.00 to 0.50.

Important distinction: Non-word vocals (vocalizations, humming, chanting without words, etc.) are allowed and have been for years. This deduction applies specifically to music that contains recognizable words or speech.

New Music Approval Process Coming August 2026

The committees voted to establish a music approval subcommittee made up of national committee members. This subcommittee will define a new music approval process to begin August 1, 2026.

Details of what this process will look like have not been announced yet. We will update this article as more information becomes available.
